Scientists have found an effective way to prolong life and lose weight
The consumption of foods with a low fat content and a small amount of calories prevents the aging of the central nervous system. This conclusion was made by scientists at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, who also proved that exercise is less effective for weight loss than diet. The article is published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience.
Studies using model organisms such as rodents have shown that aging and obesity are accompanied by chronic inflammatory processes in specific areas of the brain, including the hypothalamus, corpus callosum, and the brain vault, consisting of white matter. The main role in this is played by microglia - cells of the immune system (macrophages) involved in the destruction and absorption of foreign agents and dead cells.
During the experiment, mice at the age of six months or two years old who were on a diet high in fat or low were used. In this case, older rodents were given a low-calorie feed or they were provided with access to a running wheel. It turned out that the most effective way to reduce the activity of microglia in the brain, associated with aging and obesity, was a diet low in fat and calories.
