US authorities accused the IOC and FIFA of corruption
The US Department of Justice launched an investigation into corruption in the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Football Federation (FIFA), the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), and the National Olympic Committee of the United States. This is reported by The New York Times.
According to the newspaper, the Department of Justice was interested in possible money laundering, extortion and fraud. The fraud is connected with the election of the hosts of the two world championships in athletics - 2019 and 2021, received by Doha and Eugene (USA). As part of the case, the authorities expect to receive testimony, documents and records of financial transactions.
The investigation also concerns the company Helios Partners, which, allegedly, helped Russia obtain the rights to host the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and the 2018 World Cup in football.
